The concept of the UFO Book is to make complicated text seem simple and easy to read. It shouldn‘t scare away people with filled pages, it is exactly the opposite. Whitespace and thin lines make the content look light and comfortable to read. But it should not get too boring – small details like arrows and the captions draw attention to them in order to create interesting hierarchy. Additionally, the pull-out-quotes, which by their unusual and surprising position create a very dynamic visual that not only contributes to the reading experience, but also brings in a dirtier side to the book. Pacing is very important thus image and diagrams try to keep the interest high.
The size of the book is 7x9.5, displaying a rather big small book. It should be convenient enough to take with you in your bag but still fit a lot of content on the page, especially easily readable diagrams, images and tables. The Cover is soft to make it feel more like a fast read.
I decided to pull out the tables to separate pages because their size and look would interfere with the grid. Thin arrows guide the reader to the page where to find the tables
The orientation system of the book is found on the side written from bottom to top. It creates contrast to the body-copy, makes it easily discernible and interesting to look at.
